*IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Booking a restaurant is always recommended! Please remember that dining in Rome doesn't usually offer impeccable service. If your party's food doesn't come out at the same time, the staff seems uninterested and absent minded, menu items are not in stock or it takes 20 minutes to get the bill, this can be normal, do not take it personally. Actually, when places are particularly informal, sometimes the ruder the waiter the better the food. Hey, when in Rome...
  • TIPPING POLICY: though tipping in Italy (in restaurants) is not mandatory it doesn't mean that people don't tip! It's usually expected especially in touristy areas and in general it's customary when the service is good (in this case it's kind of rude not to tip). Some restaurants might still charge the service fee (which includes bread) but not a single cent of that money goes into the waiter's pocket. You might take that into account if the service fee is too high (over 2.50 per person) and reduce the tip which is usually 5-10% of the total bill. Also, feel totally free not to tip when you receive poor service.
Restaurants: 5-10%

Tour Guides: 10%

Coffee/breakfast at a bar/cafe: a few cents

(usually to round up the small bill)

Cabs: no tipping required unless you really feel like.
